Cranes

So - it occurred to me yesterday....how do you put a crane up? Not the smaller ones on the backs of lorries like this one on the left, but the tower kind, which are huge. More like this:
To get something that big and heavy into the air you'd need a crane wouldn't you? So do they use cranes to put up cranes? But then how did the first crane (the one they use to put the second one up) get put up?

It could be one of the great unsolved mysteries of the universe.

I suggest you go to Dubai on a fact finding/greatest unsolved mysteries of the universe solving mission. Apparently 23% of the world's non-avarian crane population is currently there.

This made me laugh! I love the idea of you with a slightly wrinkled forehead, staring out into middle distance, trying to work it out! I suggest you ask an architect/ builder/ engineer if you want to be put out of your misery... or if you're happy with your wonderment then don't worry about it!
