TV Theology

I think you can tell a lot about where someone's coming from theologically by whether or not they leave their TV on standby.

Yes, explain to me this whole notion of putting a TV on standby; what's the point?

I gotta admit, I think the whole TV standby thing is a real conscience soother.

Don't get me wrong, I know that turning a TV off saves a lot more energy than leaving it on standby, but ultimately what good does that do us if we all then go get in our cars, drive to the airport and take a cheap flight to france for the weekend?

I'm certainly not claiming to be any better, I'm just as guilty as the next guy - I'm just saying that I think there are more fundamental problems which are built into our lifestyle which need to be addressed. Turning the TV off rather than on standby but then ignoring fuel consumption is, in my mind, akin to ignoring all poverty in Africa because you sponsor a child.

I wanna reiterate, I don't claim to be better than anyone else here, and I'm not denying that small things make a difference, because they do. Small steps are needed to eventually take larger ones. That said, I still think that even if everyone who had a TV turned it off, we'd still be screwed from all the fuel we burn.

I should also be constructive in my criticism and point folks towards www.carbonneutral.com

It's a good site to help offset your carbon emissions.

I'm much better than most people.

And I don't sponsor a child.
